Keyword density is a value determined by comparing the ratio of search engine terms to the overall content of the webpage. The higher the density percentage of specific keyword use for content evaluated will result in better SERPs ranking than a competitor. There's always a possibility of overusing keywords which might be considered "spamming" by search engines. This occurs when keywords or phrase is over saturated for the amount of content on a webpage which can produce a negative impact on ranking.
Keyword density goes hand in hand with keyword proximity which means that placement of search terms and phrases in the content can influence how well the term ranks. Using primarily keywords in the first and last paragraphs of webpage content will produce consistent results, although there are many additional factors that affect ranking which are only know to each of the specific search engines.
A minimum keyword density for for search terms is between 2% and 5% although speculation on the internet by some SEO experts indicates that keyword density is not as highly important as it once was. Speculation or not, if term density does play a part of SERPs ranking scores then it is wise to optimize all content on every page. Achieving a balance between content readability and terms density is a challenge even to an experienced SEO technician but can improve SERPS ranking results which is an important consideration if online competition practices ongoing website optimization. |
